Training Job Overview

Instructors and trainers are needed across a wide range of fields. Some, like driving and motorcycle instructors, teach practical skills to pupils working towards a standardised qualification. Sports instructors teach disciplines like swimming, skiing, or martial arts, while gym and fitness instructors conduct exercise programmes, to a class or one on one. Animal trainers train dogs and other animals destined for the military, security, or care industry. In the workplace, training may be provided in job skills from using software to driving a fork lift. Instructors may work in-house, at a training centre, or freelance. Training coordinators oversee the training programme of an organisation, often as part of the HR team.

Training Job Education Requirements

Trainers and instructors need not only a high level of competence in their discipline, but the ability to pass on their knowledge to others in a clear, understandable way. Good communication and people skills are essential.
Educational requirements range from high school to bachelor's degree level. Some posts need a specific qualification or certification, and specialist instruction may be required in how to train others.

There is always a need for trainers and instructors across business and leisure fields. Qualified trainers also have the choice of setting up on their own or joining an established organisation, like a gym or a driving school, according to their experience, budget, and preference.

Training Job Salaries

Salaries in this field vary according to the trainer's experience and the area of the training. Information technology training is a well-paid sector, with an median salary of £27,012. Software trainers are looking to fetch slightly more, the median being at £27,221. The salary of a personal trainer has quite a wide range, with earnings between £25,000 and £75,000 a year. Driving instructors earn, on average, £19.21 an hour. All of these roles are usually paid by the hour, with the trainer granted some flexibility around the number of hours worked, and when.
