Social Work Job Overview

Social work is a challenging career, but people who are caring by nature, good communicators and listeners, are able to withstand pressure both from clients and in work situations, and who are able to be totally professional yet flexible in their work find that the rewards of the job are immense.
Social workers function in a variety of settings, such as within communities, health clinics, hospitals, and schools, and may work for private organisations or for government or local authorities.
Typically, a social worker will focus on one particular group of clients, including:
  • Children at risk in home situations
  • Elderly people
  • Youngsters who have been or are in offender institutions
  • People with mental health conditions
  • Individuals with physical or learning disabilities
  • Homeless people
  • Substance abusers

Social Worker Job Education Requirements

To become a social worker a person has to achieve an undergraduate or master's degree in social work. To be accepted at a learning institution, it is often good to have some practical experience of caring work either as a volunteer, through work experience at school level, or as a paid worker. Entry requirements vary throughout the UK but usually applicants need at least 5 GCSEs grade A* to C, including English and maths, and 2 to 4 A-levels. Once qualified, a social worker has to be registered with one of the four UK regulators in order to practice.
A social work assistant, who works with a qualified social worker, needs to have practical experience in care situations and can work towards a diploma or certificate in social care.

Social Work Job Market

Research shows that the UK job market is open for newly qualified social workers (NQSW). Around 96 per cent of local authorities are willing to employ NQSWs, although are not actively recruiting them. However, in reality it's not always easy to find employment as a NQSW as many of the jobs on offer are only suitable for experienced social workers.
There will always be a demand for social workers in today's society and social worker teams throughout the country have vacancies.

Social Worker Job Salaries

Entry-level social workers can earn between £19,500 and £25,000 per year and an experienced worker's annual income varies between £26,000 and £40,000. Social workers in management roles may achieve £60,000 to £70,000, depending on seniority. An assistant social worker may receive between £12,500 and £22,000 per year, based on experience and responsibilities. An agency worker will probably be paid about £7 to £10 an hour.
