Science Job Overview

Scientific careers can be found in many sectors, including academia, government agencies, health care, and industry, and can vary from pure research through to implementing practical applications in cutting-edge technology. From particle physics to microbiology, astronomy to ecology, science pervades and interacts with every aspect of life, and fascinating, rewarding careers can be built upon endeavours such as the fight against infectious disease, development of new materials and processes, or the simple expansion of knowledge and understanding about the natural world. Opportunities exist within teaching, laboratory or theoretical studies, and field work, whilst the advent of tighter safety and environmental regulations means many industries must retain scientific staff in order to maintain and monitor compliance.

Science Job Education Requirements

Careers in science generally require some higher education such as a graduate degree. To some extent, skills learnt in one scientific field can be transferred successfully to other disciplines, although many posts will require more specific qualifications following specialised study at postgraduate level. However, some commercial and industrial employers do offer entry level laboratory assistant or technician roles open to applicants with appropriate A-levels, and these can form a sound basis for further career development. The sciences are divided broadly into physics, chemistry and life sciences, and each leads into various specialised fields, for instance quantum mechanics, chemical engineering or ecology.

Science Job Market

Because scientific careers arise in a wide variety of sectors, many openings are available for suitably qualified applicants. There are posts for laboratory technicians across a wide variety of industries, especially food and drink where regulation requires constant quality assurance and safety testing, whilst there is strong demand for materials scientists across many industrial and manufacturing concerns. Biotechnology is another 'hot' sector offering good remuneration and exciting opportunities in a rapidly growing field.

Science Job Salaries

Current salary trends indicate entry-level laboratory technicians earn on average £19,995 p.a., whilst researchers across all fields can expect an average of £39,878, encompassing the range from £20,000 to £60,000+ at the lower and higher ends of the scale. Careers in medical devices and biotechnology offer the highest salaries with averages of £59,817 and £50,166 respectively.
