Marketing Job Overview

Marketing professionals are responsible for promoting products and services, designing effective advertising campaigns, and using both traditional and social media to build brand reputation. Other responsibilities include devising public relations strategies, organising events, attending product launches, answering enquiries from the media, and securing sponsorships. Successful marketers must be creative and have strong research skills, since their job entails analysing data and carrying out market research. Excellent communication skills are a must for marketing professionals, as they are required to liaise with clients, sponsors, and the media on a regular basis. Time-management and organisational skills are crucial for anyone interested in a marketing career, and so are commercial awareness and the ability to work under pressure. Marketing jobs are mostly full time and may involve frequent travel to attend press releases, networking events, etc.

Marketing Job Education Requirements

It is possible to enter this profession with a HND or HNC in business or marketing, but a degree in marketing, communications, or business management is preferred by the majority of employers unless a candidate has substantial experience in the field. There are specialist qualifications available from the Chartered Institute of Marketing too. Typical career progression involves advancing from marketing assistant to marketing executive or account manager, and possibly onto marketing director.

Marketing professionals who have at least 5 years' experience in the field can expect to earn salaries of £40,000/year and upwards. In the case of marketing directors and highly experienced project managers, salaries can easily exceed the £60,000/year mark.
