Healthcare Jobs

Healthcare Job Overview

A career in healthcare can be one of the most rewarding and challenging careers to undertake. The healthcare field offers a variety of jobs across experience levels, from entry-level to mid-level positions and senior management roles. Workers interested in the healthcare industry may select from a wide range of specialisms. Nursing is a popular focus and has a range of jobs, such as general nursing posts ranging in grade and posts across several different specialisms such as cardiology nurses, paediatric nurses and trauma nurses. Outside of nursing, one may choose to work with patients within the fields of occupational therapy, physiotherapy, midwifery, speech therapy or pharmacology. Alternatively, many people find a satisfying career path in patient support service roles like patient advocacy, medical data entry and medical equipment repairs. There are several roles in dentistry, mental health and podiatry, as well as a number in X-ray services. The field of healthcare also includes a wide variety of veterinary roles.

Healthcare Job Education Requirements

Staff nurse posts require a pre-registration nursing degree in a relevant specialism such as paediatrics or mental health, as well as post-graduate experience. Candidates seeking a unique role such as physiotherapist or midwife will also need specialist post-graduate vocational training like a qualification accredited by the Health and Care Professions Council. It may also be mandatory to belong to a professional association; for example, an optometrist may need to be registered with the General Optometrist Council. However, many entry-level jobs do not require degree-level qualifications. For a role like care assistant there may not be any formal requirements, although a DBS check may be necessary, and companies may offer vocational training for employees.

Healthcare Job Market

Over the last year the number of healthcare jobs advertised has risen by around 23%, showing that there is an upward trend.

Healthcare Job Salaries

A Grade D nurse earns an average of around £30,000 per year, depending on location, whilst a more senior nurse on Grade H will have an average salary of £43,267. Specialist roles often command a higher salary, such as an average of £37,418 for a physiotherapist, or £61,566 for a midwife salary, whilst a lower grade role like a carer pays about £18,021.
