Customer Service Job Overview

Customer service agents (sometimes known as customer service advisors or representatives) provide customers and/or the general public with information and advice about products or services. The most typical responsibilities involved in customer service roles include handling phone calls and re-directing them to the relevant department if necessary, dealing with complaints, taking orders and selling goods or services, issuing refunds, and keeping accurate customer records. Excellent interpersonal skills are crucial in customer service roles. Customer service agents must be able to communicate clearly, be calm, polite, and friendly, and must have problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills. Basic IT skills (databases, e-mail, etc.) are also necessary. Customer service roles can be either full- or part-time. Weekend and shift work is common.

Customer Service Job Education Requirements

Employers often look for candidates with a good standard of general education. This may include GCSEs in maths and English or college courses in customer service or contact centre operations. Apprenticeship schemes are another route into this occupation. Advancement opportunities are available for individuals who have a proven track record of providing outstanding customer service and for those who study towards specialist qualifications, like level 3 or 4 NVQs or the customer service strategy and management courses offered by the Institute of Customer Service.

However, declining standards of customer service mean that there is an urgent need for qualified and enthusiastic professionals. There are also many job openings in areas like call centre management, help desk technical support, and bilingual customer service.

Studies have shown that customer service agents can expect to earn average annual salaries of £18,000. Customer service roles that involve sales tend to pay more, with average salaries ranging between £20,000 and £25,000 per year. Experienced customer service managers or supervisors can make up to £30,000 a year, and their employment often include bonuses, commissions, and other types of incentives, especially in industries like banking or retail.
